Torque wrenches are specialized tools designed to tighten bolts, nuts, and other hardware to an exact target torque value. Using precise torque is critical for securing parts without overstraining the threads or leaving dangerous looseness. Torque wrenches allow mechanics and engineers to apply optimal torque quickly and consistently.
What is Torque?
Torque measures the twisting or rotational force applied when tightening a bolt. It determines the tension generated on the threads and clamping force holding parts together. Excessive torque overstretches threads, while inadequate torque leads to vibrational loosening. Torque wrenches allow setting a target value to avoid these failures.
How Torque Wrenches Work
Torque wrenches have a ratcheting head calibrated to the desired torque value. As the wrench is pulled, internal springs compress. Upon reaching the preset level, the wrench head slips and emits an audible "click" to signal target torque is achieved. This prevents overtightening. Locking collars allow securing the torque setting. Most wrenches have exchangeable drive sizes like 3/8" or 1/2" to match various bolt and socket heads.
